Our Dance program offers a wide range of style options for Beginning, Intermediate and Advance level students. Seedlings dance teachers focus on developing strong technique, grace, rhythm and understanding of movement in relation to the anatomy in every class. Our dance styles offered include: Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Contemporary, Core Strengthening, Irish dance, Belly Dancing, African Dance, Flamenco, Ballroom styles, Character, Hip Hop, Pilates, Yoga, and Ballet Variations.

Mommy/Daddy & ME Creative Dance Spring 8-Week Session 

Our Mommy/Daddy and Me Creative Dance Session for 18 months – 5 years are fun themed dance classes that allow your child’s creativity and independence to bloom. Join your child in a 45 minute session of stretching, creative dance, acrobatic skills and ribbon-dancing fun! These unique theme-based classes will keep your tot excited about dance week after week.

In all three styles students will be challenged to pick up choreography quickly, learn multiple kinds of turns/leaps, quick directional changes and free-style/self-choreography in individual and group numbers. Maintaining weekly class attendance throughout the year is required for students at the Pre-Pointe/Pointe level.

Level Breakdown (beginning with youth and up age groupings)

Beginner I: First year students brand new to dance. Basic fundamentals of dance, classroom etiquette, performance, focus, and discipline are introduced.

Beginner II: Students with at least 1 year of dance experience and who are perfecting basic fundamentals, are ready to learn more complex footwork, can apply constructive feedback, demonstrate proper classroom etiquette and beginning to show heightened spatial and body awareness.

Intermediate I/II: Students who have grasped solid ballet techniques, ready to focus on more disciplined practices in strength, flexibility, coordination and use of space. Dancers will continue to work on more advanced techniques, movements, performance, and musicality.

Advanced/Pre Professional (Or Accelerated Advanced): Students with multiple years of training; many with a focus on either professional dance opportunities or college bound dance programs. Students have perfected techniques and showmanship. Ability to apply these skills to personal choreography and improvisational skills are developed. Students are seeking deeper expression, focusing on stylization, and building stronger connections between their bodies intricacies and the stories they tell. Dance Styles   Princess Ballerinas Our NEW Preschool/Kindergarten Princess Ballerinas dance program offers storybook themed dance classes on a 10-week quarterly schedule. Our tiny ballerinas get to dance with themed props/costumes & take home special activity pages, sticker charts and a certificate of achievement at the end of each session!

Kinderdance An hour Ballet/Tap class designed for 5-6 year olds. Dancers will begin to focus on basic Ballet & Tap technique/terminology, classroom etiquette & spatial movement. Classes will encourage students to use self-expression, creative dance, and listening skills.

Dance Styles

Ballet:  Classical Ballet is the traditional esthetic used to tell a story through movement without words. An abundance of grace, strength, flexibility and athleticism are emphasized in the technique. The stylistic qualities of Ballet evolved into three main stylistic divisions known as the Russion or Vaganova methods, Italian or Cecchetti method and the French method. Students will explore fundamentals of the Vaganova and Cecchetti methods in arm and leg positioning’s and movement across the floor. Classes will consist of structured series of movements performed at the barre, center floor, across the floor and at the corner. Students will explore dance terminology, musicality, adagio/allegro combinations, strength exercises, small/large jumps, turns, proper classroom etiquette, and performance.

Jazz: Jazz  is a FUN, UPBEAT, RHYTHMIC style of dance with roots from Africa. Student will be exposed to a variety of jazz styles while focusing on the fundamentals of isolations, simple rhythms and patterns, large jumps and turns, and basic performance skills. Class structure includes warm ups, stretches, isolations, across the floor progressions, and combinations.

Tap: Tap is a great way to build coordination, rhythm, strength and aerobic endurance. Students will gain flexibility and agility of the knee, ankle, and foot while learning proper tap techniques to perfect clear sounds, complex rhythms, stylistic notes and performance. (your tap teacher may have a better description that suites his class)

Contemporary: This class will focus on contemporary jazz and lyrical techniques such as contractions, floor-work, abstract and flowing lines, off center balancing, and expression. This class fuses the best of ballet, modern, and jazz into one class. Dancers learn to use their bodies to express feelings, tell stories, and connect with themselves for a deeper level of performance.

Variation/Répertoire class: Variation is part of advanced ballet specialties, which consists in learning classical ballet variations from the répertoire (for example, Kitri variation from Don Quixote). Variations can also be adapted for intermediate level.

Annual Performance Opportunities

The winter performance for our Dance, Music and Taekwondo students takes place in conjunction with the Skagit Valley Children’s Museums Annual 3-Day free “Winter Wonderland” Event held the 2nd weekend of December at the Cascade Mall in Burlington.

All costumes are made in house by staff, parent and student volunteers. Students that decide to take part in our winter performance will need to have costume rental fees paid in full by October 31st.

The  Spring performance for our Dance, Music and Taekwondo students is held annually at our Skagit Seedlings location in Mount Vernon on the third Saturday of June. Due to our limited seating we hold a 2pm matinee show and 6pm evening show.  Tickets  Students will be expected to attend a dress rehearsal held the previous Saturday from 10am-2pm. Rehearsal specifics for each class will be handed out in class.

Originating from the Cuban Mambo this style of Latin dance became popular in the 1950’s. A non-progressive dance with a fun and upbeat attitude. This Latin dance uses forward and back rock steps with Chasse’s in between. A popular style often danced to Latin, Country and Pop music.

6-Week Class: February 22th – March 29th, 2018Originating in the 1940’s from the Lindy Hop, West coast Swing is a slot dance which uses stretch and compression to create an elastic look. Known as a living dance, West Coast Swing is in a state of constant evolution, incorporating new trends in dance and music giving it the ability to be danced to nearly any style whether Jazz, Disco, Country, Latin or Pop.

6-Week Ballroom Social Hang Out

A fun mix of Ballroom, Latin, Swing and Country dancing for Teens, learn how to dance to any style of music. Partner dancing is a fun social skill that can be utilized throughout a persons entire life. With obvious benefits of physical activity dance has also been found to improve brain health.

Come out and learn some tap with our awesome teacher Pat Doran! No experience necessary-bring your tap shoes and be prepared for a hoofing good time!

Required Attire and Hair: Fitness clothes and black tap shoes Hair to be pulled back from your face. *Suggested: Dance Bag & water bottle suggested.

** Please note that all class level ages are advised by the instructor and students will be evaluated in class to determine advanced placement.**

** Attire for dancers ages 2.5yrs-6yrs consist of pink ballet slippers, pink tights, pink leotard and/or black tap shoes. Attire for dancers ages 7yrs-18yrs consist of pink ballet slippers, pink tights, black leotards, black tap shoes and black jazz shoes. Skirts and leggings are suggested for ages 7 and up. Hair should be in a bun or pulled back from face.**

Level Breakdown (beginning with youth and up age groupings)

Beginner I: First year students brand new to dance. Basic fundamentals of dance, classroom etiquette, performance, focus, and discipline are introduced.

Beginner II: Students with at least 1 year of dance experience and who are perfecting basic fundamentals, are ready to learn more complex footwork, can apply constructive feedback, demonstrate proper classroom etiquette and beginning to show heightened spatial and body awareness.

Intermediate I/II: Students who have grasped solid ballet techniques, ready to focus on more disciplined practices in strength, flexibility, coordination and use of space. Dancers will continue to work on more advanced techniques, movements, performance, and musicality.

Advanced/Pre Professional (Or Accelerated Advanced): Students with multiple years of training; many with a focus on either professional dance opportunities or college bound dance programs. Students have perfected techniques and showmanship. Ability to apply these skills to personal choreography and improvisational skills are developed. Students are seeking deeper expression, focusing on stylization, and building stronger connections between their bodies intricacies and the stories they tell. Dance Styles   Princess Ballerinas Our NEW Preschool/Kindergarten Princess Ballerinas dance program offers storybook themed dance classes on a 10-week quarterly schedule. Our tiny ballerinas get to dance with themed props/costumes & take home special activity pages, sticker charts and a certificate of achievement at the end of each session!

Kinderdance An hour Ballet/Tap class designed for 5-6 year olds. Dancers will begin to focus on basic Ballet & Tap technique/terminology, classroom etiquette & spatial movement. Classes will encourage students to use self-expression, creative dance, and listening skills.

Dance Styles

Ballet:  Classical Ballet is the traditional esthetic used to tell a story through movement without words. An abundance of grace, strength, flexibility and athleticism are emphasized in the technique. The stylistic qualities of Ballet evolved into three main stylistic divisions known as the Russion or Vaganova methods, Italian or Cecchetti method and the French method. Students will explore fundamentals of the Vaganova and Cecchetti methods in arm and leg positioning’s and movement across the floor. Classes will consist of structured series of movements performed at the barre, center floor, across the floor and at the corner. Students will explore dance terminology, musicality, adagio/allegro combinations, strength exercises, small/large jumps, turns, proper classroom etiquette, and performance.

Jazz: Jazz  is a FUN, UPBEAT, RHYTHMIC style of dance with roots from Africa. Student will be exposed to a variety of jazz styles while focusing on the fundamentals of isolations, simple rhythms and patterns, large jumps and turns, and basic performance skills. Class structure includes warm ups, stretches, isolations, across the floor progressions, and combinations.

Tap: Tap is a great way to build coordination, rhythm, strength and aerobic endurance. Students will gain flexibility and agility of the knee, ankle, and foot while learning proper tap techniques to perfect clear sounds, complex rhythms, stylistic notes and performance. (your tap teacher may have a better description that suites his class)

Contemporary: This class will focus on contemporary jazz and lyrical techniques such as contractions, floor-work, abstract and flowing lines, off center balancing, and expression. This class fuses the best of ballet, modern, and jazz into one class. Dancers learn to use their bodies to express feelings, tell stories, and connect with themselves for a deeper level of performance.

Variation/Répertoire class: Variation is part of advanced ballet specialties, which consists in learning classical ballet variations from the répertoire (for example, Kitri variation from Don Quixote). Variations can also be adapted for intermediate level.

Annual Performance Opportunities

The winter performance for our Dance, Music and Taekwondo students takes place in conjunction with the Skagit Valley Children’s Museums Annual 3-Day free “Winter Wonderland” Event held the 2nd weekend of December at the Cascade Mall in Burlington.

All costumes are made in house by staff, parent and student volunteers. Students that decide to take part in our winter performance will need to have costume rental fees paid in full by October 31st.

The  Spring performance for our Dance, Music and Taekwondo students is held annually at our Skagit Seedlings location in Mount Vernon on the third Saturday of June. Due to our limited seating we hold a 2pm matinee show and 6pm evening show.  Tickets  Students will be expected to attend a dress rehearsal held the previous Saturday from 10am-2pm. Rehearsal specifics for each class will be handed out in class.
